Coffee: Friend or Foe?

Coffee may have benefic effects because it contains high amounts of antioxidants and can reduce the risk of certain diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, inflammation, or Parkinson`s disease. However, coffee may also have side effects.

Due to the antioxidant properties of coffee, the risk of cardiovascular disease and inflammation can be decreased for women who drink coffee, according to a recent study. The regular coffee consumption, especially decaffeinated coffee, may lower the risk of having Type 2 diabetes.

Older women who consumed coffee throughout their life appeared to have better memory and cognitive skills. Caffeine may have a key role in preserving their cognitive skills, showed the study.

Small amounts of caffeine may reduce the risk of Parkinson`s disease for women who followed a therapy with postmenopausal hormone, according to the study. Moderate-to-high levels of caffeine may decrease the risk of Parkinson`s disease for women who did not follow a hormone therapy.
Caffeine excess may lead to sleeplessness, abnormal heart rhythms, irritability, restlessness, tremors, anxiety, headaches, or gastrointestinal problems. For some people it may cause high blood pressure.

Adrenalin remain elevated even at night if the last coffee was drunk at lunch, according to another study. Coffee is considered an anti-nutrient because it restrains the absorption of potassium, vitamin B, zinc, magnesium, or iron.

Coffee consumption is not a cause of cardiovascular diseases, according to researchers. The study monitored the effects of coffee, not caffeine. Coffee contains other chemicals beside caffeine and some are benefic.

Caffeine is known to cause increased blood pressure, decreased insulin sensitivity, or fatty acids. For most people, coffee consumed in moderate amounts - two to four cups per day does not affect their health, showed the studies.

My beverage of choice is Tea, but I do drink a fair bit of coffee, black no sweetener. I shouldn't drink as much of it as I do mind you but I shouldn't eat pulled pork sandwiches either and that too is not going to stop!

I have accepted coffee as my personal savior.

The element heats, the water boils, the heated water drips into the redolent fine-ground Beans Of Life, and The Elemental And Necessary Essence moves, drop by precious drop, into The Blest Carafe, from which it shall soon be transferred in part into The Grand Ceremonial Cup Of Starting Fluid, and then into Your Obedient Servant.

There is no goddess but Caffeinia, and Juan Valdez is her prophet.

Three things about coffee.

1. It's horrible.

2. It makes me angry.

3. Tea is much better.

***(All of the above hold true when I don't have my coffee in the morning.)

Coffee is a foe.

Try some Guayaki Yerba Mate', no jitters, no crash, does not affect sleep patterns, no head aches, is loaded with good stuff. Guayaki is very good.

Wait, what? Coffee comes in eggs???? My grandma used to say the only thing I couldn't make very well was coffee......now that I don't drink it anymore, my guests have to make it themselves......still love the smell tho

In an old percolator you would put egg shells in the bottom of the pot to settle out any grounds that made it through the basket. Yes children people made coffee before Drip Coffee makers came along, honest they did!

I know, my grandmas both used to put the pot on in the morning and it would be on low the entire day, my first cup probably had more grounds than coffee, after the real on the farm cream and sugar cubes......

Sounds delicious, kj! I used to make a meal of my coffee that way, too, but now that I can't have dairy anymore, I have to drink it black.

Here's an idea if we are all serious about taking a chunk out of the federal deficit.

Let's tax caffeine like we tax tobacco and alcohol.

Even if it's an extra dollar or two on every cup of coffee sold at Starbucks. It would definitely add up!

Of course, all the soccer moms in the country would riot but think of all the money that would come in. They could use the same "We're just taxing a drug" excuse and say the money would be going to the children that worked so well when they taxed the crap out of tobacco. After all, caffeine is the drug that's used the most in this country.

French press. It really doesn't take more time to make, I simply boil water as a shower, get out, pour into press pot, 3 minutes later, COFFEE!

Yeah, I do the cone thing. Kettle on, set the mug/cone/coffee up while I pack the kids' lunches, and voila: lunches done and a fresh mug of coffee to take with me and have while I do my morning ablutions.

Nice, Spif! I have a travel press mug as well, it's the same size as a regular tall commuter mug but with a press. At my last job, I just left ground coffee in the fridge and had my own press coffee :)

Probably the oddest place in San Francisco, brewing-wise is Blue Bottle. They individually drip each mug manually, it's trippy to see all the mugs lined up, brewing. They also do the art in the cappuccino foam. Slightly more pricey than Starbucks, but an incredible cup of coffee, though it does come a bit cooler than most are used to because the brewing takes about 5 minutes.

Their beans are amazingly fresh, too, they only sell their small-batch roasted beans for up to 48 hours after roasting.

Oh, really? YOU are one of those "it's okay to leave the blistering hot carafe sitting there on the burner with 1/16 of a cup of coffee left reducing down to undrinkable BP-grade sludge because I didn't take the very last drop so I don't have to spend the 42 seconds of my time that I was otherwise going to waste cruising Newsvine to start a new pot for my fellow pathetic caffeine addicts" a$$holes? I am SO disappointed in you!

There is a coffee shop here in Austin that french-presses all their coffee.
